FAQ

Frequently Asked HVAC Questions

  • What is the difference between a package unit and a split system?

Package units (also called self-contained units) require no external air handlers, coils, or heating units. A split system unit operates by using both indoor and outdoor mechanisms.

  • Do I have the right size HVAC unit?

A system that is too large or too small can be problematic if not addressed quickly. If your air conditioner is too small, it won’t keep your entire home cool. If the system is too big, it will turn on and off too often, damaging the compressor. Let one of our technicians inspect your home to see what size unit is best for you. We can also give you suggestions on how to make your existing unit work more efficiently.

  • What is a rating number?

Government mandates require that all air conditioning and heating equipment receive an efficiency rating. The rating number is the percentage of efficiently used energy. The higher the rating, the higher the efficiency. Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating or SEER also measures the efficiency. A high SEER rating means a more efficient unit.

  • I have an outdoor unit with plants nearby. Is this ok?

A safe distance for your plants is about two feet or more. That way, air can circulate in and out of the unit freely. The key is avoiding the need to service your unit early because of overheating.

  • When do I need to clean the filters?

Every month, you should make it a point to clean the filters in your HVAC system. Dirty, clogged filters can cause several problems, including system malfunctioning, uncomfortable temperatures, unexpected repairs, and a bigger bill.

  • Why is my bedroom so cold (or hot)?

This is usually a ductwork problem. Luckily, this issue can be fixed pretty easily. A basic reworking of the ductwork system can balance the airflow.

  • Is there an “ideal” thermostat temperature?

The ideal temperature for each home is different. You’ll most likely figure out the ideal temperature by setting the thermostat as low or as high as you can (during winter and summer, respectively) and observe how comfortable it is for you and your family. Stay consistent with those established temperatures. A programmable thermostat can be helpful in this situation.
